BEHIND THE RUNWAY DESIGN:
AMBUSH® AW22 MEN / WOMEN COLLECTION
AMBUSH® debuted its first Milan Fashion Week collection on February 26, 2022, presenting the AUTUMN WINTER 2022 MEN / WOMEN COLLECTION. Bridging elements from creative director YOON's creative toolkit — Japanese anime, visual art, and outer space — the set design, produced by Villa Eugenie, brought the collection's concept into focus.
Central to the runway, a large solar sphere is squeezed from floor to ceiling. The sphere, at times reminiscent of Olaf Eliasson's The Weather Project, grounds the show in gravitational reality, placing models as planets among the sun's rotation.
The runway's surface, coated with fine white quartz, created a physical atmosphere that felt somehow both of earth and otherworldly simultaneously. The sphere's color transforms with the light for the show's duration. From deep red to cool white and blue, the light reveals the sun's subtle textured surface.
Drawn to both reality and fantasy, YOON pulls from a breadth of references: some models appeared as anime characters brought to life, while others, dressed in leather and silver chainmail, imbued the sensual rawness of From Dusk Till Dawn. This interplay between reality and fantasy is fundamental to the AMBUSH® design ethos.
