TURNING HEADS: STOP MAKING SENSE
The bucket hat was originally designed with little more than practicality in mind but its current incarnation turns heads. The now-iconic downward sloping rim was first created to shield the faces of farmers and fishermen from the rain and its compact size made it easy to slip into any pocket. Although the bucket hat has held on to much of its original utility, it has evolved into a wardrobe mainstay with a surprisingly wide range of contemporary connotations –– golf, hip-hop, gift-shop memorabilia, raves –– which give the bucket hat a universal quality. Managing to be both subtly subversive and unconcernedly conventional, the modern bucket hat appeals to a number of sensibilities and subcultures — an unassuming finishing touch to all considered outfits.
